When you need to keep hold of belongings without cluttering up your space, self storage units offer the perfect solution. They allow you to free up some much needed space in your home. It can be tempting to throw everything into storage but beware; there are some things you can’t store in storage units. Here is some help and guidance on the things you shouldn’t store in self storage units.

1. Hazardous Materials

Naturally, storage companies try to minimise their risks as much as possible by not allowing storage of hazardous materials. If they can catch fire or explode then they are not to be stored. Some common items include propane, oil, grease, cleaners, chemicals, paints, gasoline, aerosols and fireworks. Liquids such as fertilisers or pesticides can also be dangerous.

2. Living Animals or Plants

It goes without saying that any living creature should never be left alone inside a storage facility. It is no place for humans, animals, and plants. Living organisms need sunlight, fresh air, and food to survive, all of which a storage unit lacks.

3. Perishable Food Items

It could be tempting to use your self storage unit as your personal grocery store, but anything that needs refrigerating is perishable and is a no go. Non-perishable foods can be fine to store, especially if they are kept in airtight containers.

4. Scented Items

It seems odd, but scented materials can attract rodents and bugs; that’s why storage facilities don’t allow them in their units. Examples include soaps, lotions, incense, essential oils, perfumes, candles, or spices.
